Democrats Left Liberal Democratic Party

democrats left liberal Democrats Left Liberal Democratic Party

The Democratic Party is the oldest political party in the world. It's origins evolved from Anti-federalist factions opposed to the fiscal policies of Alexander Hamilton in the early 1790s.

Thomas Jefferson and James Madison created the Democratic-Republican Party and the party's key issues included strong support of states' rights, supported a strict defining of the Constitution andopposed a national bank

They won their first election in the election of 1800.

After the war of 1812, they were divided on issues that once was it's focal point in opposition to the Federalist Party which for all intents and purposes was gone. The party faction that supported many of the old Jeffersonian principles was later led by Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, and became the Democratic Party

The American Civil War divided Democrats into War Democrats and Peace Democrats. Most War Democrats supported President Lincoln and the Republicans' National Union Party. After the war Southern Democrats benefited from white Southerners' resentment of Reconstruction.

After the Second World War issues such as the Cold War and the Civil Rights Movement helped the Republicans make great gains in white southerners from the Democratic coalition with their resistance to the New Deal and Great Society liberalism.

But this caused the African American traditional support for the Republican Party to erode. Lending their support to the Franklin Roosevelt administration's New Deal, and the later Civil Rights movement.
